With the Easter holiday coming up, the Humane Society is no doubt preparing for the influx of unwanted rabbits that are sure to come through its doors in the near future. Every year, rabbits that are purchased as Easter gifts are dumped at the local shelter when the novelty wears off (or worse, many are abandoned outdoors to fend for themselves). The “Make Mine Chocolate” campaign works to educate the public about the responsibilities of rabbit ownership, in the hopes that fewer bunnies will be victims of impulse buyers during this time of year. Check out their website at www.makeminechocolate.org.
If you read this blog, though, I’m guessing you’re probably not the kind of person who considers pets to be disposable. For anyone that’s serious about caring for a rabbit, the BHS has plenty that need good homes! Chowder is an incredibly sweet guy who has been at the shelter since February. When we first met him, we immediately began to worry that he would be difficult to place… as a plain white rabbit with pink eyes, he’s likely to be overlooked. The pink eyes can be off-putting for many people, and his large muscular build probably doesn’t help any (perhaps there’s too close of a resemblance to the Rabbit of Caerbannog? Run away, Run away!) Okay, all joking aside… if you take just a minute to get to know him, you’ll fall in love with him! Chowder LOVES to snuggle and be petted, and he’s very gentle. His sweet personality and loving temperament will more than make up for his looks… although personally, I think he’s pretty darn cute. You have to meet him!
